A Different Kind of Cabo

Far from the images of drunken Spring Breakers and crowded pool parties that you remember plastered across MTV (I know we all remember that one episode of Laguna Beach)— trust me, there is new life to be discovered in Cabo. And *spoiler alert*, it features five-star stays, charming culture & exceptional local cuisine. Sure, you can still wander your way into a Señor Frogs if that’s your style, but the scene here has evolved.

There are two sides to Cabo and it’s important to know which one you prefer before you pack your bags. The charming San José del Cabo and the splashy Cabo San Lucas are both are filled with authentic cuisine, fresh-squeezed margaritas and lavish resorts- plus most importantly, stunning views of the water and El Arco. But there are subtle differences between the two towns, and it shows in the style of restaurants and shops that line the streets. To give you a glimpse of how Cabo has evolved, I’ve included some of my favorite spots. Keep in mind, I’m barely scratching the surface of what’s in Cabo. The area has seen a notable boom in new hotels in the past few years.

Oh, and if you need a reason to convince the hubby to head South-- Cabo is home to four of Golf Digest’s 100 Best Courses in the World.

CHILENO BAY

Chic and sophisticated are the words most used to describe Chileno Bay. A newcomer on the scene, this resort offers a laid-back, hip vibe for the 30-something working professional whose looking for an upscale stay, without the stuffiness of a usual five-star. Details will leave an impression here, with handy features like the ability to chat with the staff via text & ordering cocktails from the floating pool bar- not to mention, Chileno Bay sits on one of the only swimmable beaches in the area.

THE CAPE

If Chileno Bay is chic and sophisticated, The Cape can best be described as surfer chic. Catering to a younger crowd, the rooms here feature accents like hand-painted ceramic tiles, copper bathtubs & swinging daybeds. The views steal the show at The Cape, where it feels like every inch of property manages to look out directly at Cabo’s famous El Arco and the stunning Sea of Cortez. You’ll find everything here from young couples on a romantic getaway, to surfers seeking waves, to upscale party goers who have come for fun on the infamous rooftop bar, aptly named, The Rooftop. If you’re seeking playful style and a lively scene, the Cape delivers.

FLORA FARMS

A lush farm isn’t exactly what you would expect to find amid the Mexican desert, but Flora Farms is a true oasis. It’s not easy to get out here, and be aware that cab fare in Cabo can be pricey, but once you’ve arrived, you’ll find over 10 acres of lush green lawns, flower beds and vegetable gardens. Come for a cooking class or seasonal farm workshop & stick around for dinner at the restaurant for a true farm-to-table experience, where everything from the food to the vegetable-garnished cocktails are made with products straight from the farm. The culinary hot spot has surged in popularity over the years, and seen the likes of George Clooney, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Adam Levine dine under the string lights.

MANTA

I’m not usually one for hotel restaurants, but Manta at The Cape is a clear exception. Enrique Olvera is one of the most celebrated chefs in all of Mexico and Manta is his first restaurant in Cabo. The menu is an elegant blend of Japanese-inspired Mexican cuisine, with a nod to the hotel’s surfer aesthetic (cue miso style fish tacos). The setting is moody and sophisticated, with notably dark interiors that provide a stark contrast to the vibrant views of the Pacific Ocean from nearly every corner. The staff is well trained and ready to guide you- take their recommendations. On my visit, my server insisted I try the roasted sweet potato with almond “mole”- something I would have never ordered- and today, it remains one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten.
