For The Royal Portfolio, luxury goes hand-in-hand with untamed wilderness

Sundowners after our evening game-drive.

South Africa is a rare place where exclusivity meets untouched nature. It is one of the only places on Earth where opulent guest lodges meet at the doorstep of sprawling, wild abandon – even filled with predators! I have always heard from my colleagues and friends, “You just have to go to understand it.” I remember that exact moment – driving along in the open-air safari vehicle, with the golden sun setting over the distant Drakensberg Mountains, not a powerline or cell tower in sight, that I thought to myself, “Why would you travel anywhere else?”

There is no better example of this than The Royal Portfolio, a collection of family-run luxury hotels in extraordinary South African locations. What sets them apart is their unique offering of everything from safari, wine, sea, and art experiences, figuratively making them a “one-stop solution” for a country with many destinations.

Inside each property, the humble owners, Phil and Liz Biden (no relation to U.S. President Joe Biden), craft an escape not just to a destination but into the arms of a family’s cherished home. Once you’ve arrived, it becomes clear that The Royal Portfolio properties aren’t just about luxury but an invitation into the heart of their founder, Liz Biden, and her family's personal retreats.

The story begins with the Biden family’s private holiday homes, where memories were cradled in the lush landscapes of the African bush. “Liz wanted to extend the joy of these pristine settings to guests,” Kimi Reardon, a sales director within The Royal Portfolio, explains. It was here, among family gatherings, that the concept of The Royal Portfolio was born—from personal sanctuaries to public luxuries, each property became a vibrant echo of its locale.

Liz Biden’s approach to design is both meticulous and passionate, with every detail considered to create what she feels is the perfect stay for a guest. From the plush fabrics dressing the furniture to the local, bespoke artworks adorning the walls, every element is a thread in the rich tapestry of South Africa’s own story. The properties radiate a decidedly maximalist charm, each room a canvas where Liz’s visions come alive – often unexpected but always elegant, creating a unique and personal experience for each guest.

Beyond the design, the brand’s core values form the backbone of its mission. Each property is uniquely responsive to its environment, engaging in projects that resonate most with the local needs—from rhino conservation efforts in the wilderness to supporting marine life along the coast. “We do not blanket stamp one project across the portfolio,” Kimi notes, highlighting the tailored approach that respects and enhances the local habitats and communities.

What’s really great is that The Royal Portfolio’s integration into local communities extends beyond environmental efforts. It is deeply woven into the fabric of each property, prioritizing local employment and promoting internal growth. This commitment to community development is not just a part of their mission but also a way of life for The Royal Portfolio, creating a positive impact that extends far beyond the walls of their properties. “Once you're a part of the Royal Portfolio family, it's pretty rare someone wants to leave,” Kimi adds, underscoring the familial atmosphere that envelops not only the staff, but the guests as well.

I had the privilege of staying at Royal Malewane’s Waterside Lodge in March. In person, it becomes clear that this collection of properties is celebrated not just for its luxury appeal, but for its profound connection to place and people. I’ll never forget the small details of the team at Waterside Lodge. Like Wonder, the bartender who made me custom mocktails each day (I was pregnant on our trip) – and Steve, our butler who greeted us with a bear hug and wide smile after each game drive.

The Biden Family properties are really more than just hotels; they are true gateways to experiences – you leave not only refreshed and rejuvenated, but with a deeper understanding of South Africa’s diverse beauty.

For me, the best travel experiences are heartwarmingly personal. The Royal Portfolio offers more than just a getaway—it promises a transformative exploration, guided by the care, love, and vision of Liz Biden. Each property stands as a testament to her commitment to creating spaces that are not only visually stunning but also soulfully connected to their environment – deeply, authentically and memorably.
